Three local All-NVL stars are helping team Connecticut in the Big League Softball Eastern Regionals in West Haven this week.

Naugatuck High School pitcher Alana Wesche who earned All-State and All-NVL honors guiding the Greyhounds to their first ever state championship appearance has joined forces with two Woodland Hawks to help team Connecticut.

Woodland All-NVL pitcher Kelley Mollor along with All-State and four time All-NVL catcher Mikelyn Messina of Woodland give team Connecticut a local flavor.

All three all stars have been instrumental in team Connecticut getting out to a 2-0 record at the Eastern Regionals.

Connecticut is looking to defend last year’s Big League Softball World Series title and added the three local stars in hopes of a return trip to Kalamazoo, Mich.

Standing in the way are six teams from the east comprised of teams from Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

On Sunday, team Connecticut defeated Pennsylvania District 15 by a 4-0 margin with Kim Bogen of Seymour going the first four innings in the pitcher’s circle allowing just two hits.

Wesche came on to throw the final two innings, surrendering one hit, striking out two completing the three-hit shutout.

Messina went one for four at the plate and Moller went hitless in her only at bat but Connecticut had more than enough firepower collecting 13 hits in the win.

Bogen belted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to put the game away after spotting Connecticut with a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single.

“We had good pitching today and we didn’t make any errors in the field,” said Connecticut coach Joe Musante. “Kim had an outstanding day at the plate and pitching. It was nice to have someone like Alana come on and close the door.”

Connecticut went on to play New Jersey on Monday and had their batting shoes on as they collected 14 hits in a 13-1 win, putting them at 2-0 in the tournament.

Wesche got the start and went four innings, allowing one hit and one run before Moller came on and went the last two innings, striking out three.

Messina went two for four at the plate, scoring two runs as the Connecticut bats connected on four home runs.

Jess Hillman from Seymour led the team with two home runs and five RBI’s with Bogen and Alyssa Downs hitting home runs to put the game away.

“It was nice to see us put up that kind of production at the plate,” said Musante. “Hopefully we saved some of that for our next game as it will be a challenge. We face Delaware and they are also 2-0 with the winner getting a buy into the championship round.”
