The Naugatuck Senior Babe Ruth team advanced to the championship game in the Housatonic Valley League tournament, having come from behind twice in their final at bat.
Naugatuck emerged 4-0 in the four game series to earn the number one seed going into the semifinals, after coming back from a 7-2 deficit to defeat Amity on a walk-off home run from Matt Pikulski.
In the semifinals, Naugatuck reached down and gathered enough gumption to do it again, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Naugatuck trailed Milford 7-4 going into their final at bat when Rob Burns led off with a single.
Anthony Chance unloaded a double and Tim Brady closed the gap belting a two-run single to make it a 7-6 game.
Dan Craine worked out a walk and Tyler Erickson sent a fly ball to right, with Brady tagging up going to third.
Pikulski ripped a game-tying double and Craine came home with the winning run on a wild pitch sending Naugatuck to the title game.
Erickson picked up the win on the hill in relief and Jon Woodfield, Burns, Chance, Brady and Pikulski paced the offense with two hits each.
It came down to Amity and Naugatuck for all the marbles in the championship game and this time there would be no last at bat rally.
“We knew Amity was a good team. They gave us a heck of a battle the last time we faced them,” said Naugatuck head coach Bob Neth Sr.
Amity got on the board in the first inning on a single and an error before Bob George slammed the door shut throwing a three hitter in five innings on the hill.
“Knowing George was coming in with a fresh arm gave us a lot of confidence going up against Amity again,” said Coach Neth.
George and Chance opened the bottom of the first with base hits and Craine followed with a two-run single to put Naugatuck ahead for good.
Marc Durso pounded out a run-scoring double and Woodfield drove in the fourth run on a single to right.
Naugatuck was at it again in the second, tacking on four more runs and the damage was done with two outs.
